When
Tuesday, October 1, 2002
Materials presented at this meeting:
Marc
Rettig's Presentation (pdf)
Games, training, interactive communication and more are heading
for handhelds. What are the best ways to design for these small screens?
What issues must be faced? What trends are being set?
Please join us as three panelists show examples of their
work and discuss the issues that must be faced when designing for this
new media.
Marc Rettig consults in ethnographic research, interaction
design, and product innovation. And he teaches those subjects in public
forums, universities (Institute of Design at IIT and Carnegie Mellon University),
and in corporations. His career has spanned more than twenty years of
design, development and influence in consultancies, corporations, publishers,
and start-ups. Marc's experience with small-screen devices ranges from
research into their context of use to prototyping techniques and process
issues. At Carnegie Mellon, Marc worked with graduate students creating
innovations in "invisible technology" for art museums. As chief
experience officer at HannaHodge and Director of User Experience at Cambridge
Technology Partners, Marc investigated patterns in people's use of personal
communication devices. As principal conceptual designer of products for
dka, a Chicago-based Web start-up, he invented numerous interface and
product concepts for Web publishing. Marc also served as a design lead
in Andersen Consulting's advanced technologies group. Marc is active on
corporate and organizational advisory boards, and contributed to the formative
stages of the AIGA Experience Design SIG. (www.marcrettig.com)
Scott Corley has been working in the video game industry since
1993. After six years of Playstation and Nintendo development, Scott succumbed
to the lure of the small screen and founded Red Mercury, LLC to create
and publish Palm OS games. Red Mercury currently has five games available
for Palm OS. (http://red-mercury.com)
Daren Carstens founded Carstens Studios, Inc, where
he authors, designs, programs and develops educational products for kids
(www.matharena.com), and
creates shockwave interactive experiences for various Web sites. He has
worked in K-12 educational publishing for 12 years, and his work has received
many awards. Daren will share the work he is currently doing on a series
of postage stamp-sized puzzles and games. (www.carstensstudios.com)
