AMC
WebSIG Meeting
Tuesday, July 1, 2003
The AMC WebSIG is pleased to announce the first in a series
of presentations titled, "The Business and Practice of Web Development
Today".
Quite a bit has change in our Web world over the last seven
years since the Web first bloomed onto the scene. Simple HTML Web sites
are becoming a thing of the past. Design teams now handle the majority
of user interface and rich-media duties. Software engineering departments
focus on back-end technologies such as b2b integration, xml, databases,
portal frameworks, ECMS systems, object-oriented development, and high-performance
application architectures. Through this new series the AMC hopes to focus
on the challenges, realities, and opportunities of today's Web development
scene.
Our first presentation will be from Brian Barthelt, Director,
Software Engineering at Semaphore Partners. Here are the details.
Enterprise Web Applications 1997 to 2003 One Step Back,
Two Steps Forward
The landscape in enterprise web application development has
changed significantly in the last several years. Large companies have
evolved in their thinking: from using the web for flat online brochures
to creating complex multi-tiered high availability systems that actually
attempt to improve the bottom line.
Brian Barthelt, Director of Software Engineering at Semaphore
Partners has had a front-row seat as platforms, partners, "silver-bullet"
products, and buzzwords have come and gone. Brian will attempt to describe
why certain platforms, products, and approaches have succeeded, and others
have failed. He'll address case studies of applications developed at Semaphore
Partners 3 or 4 years ago, and then cover how those applications might
be developed differently today. Brian will also talk about some recent
projects that demonstrate the new landscape. He'll also give his viewpoint
on the skills that he feels developers need to have in today's post-bubble
web world.
